Sky York Journal On Friday, a federal judge in New York dismissed Donald Trump’s copyright suit against Bob Woodward and Simon and Schuster. So much for the president’s plan to extort $50 million from the publisher for conspiracy to collate and cobble! But when God closes a door, she opens a window. And so that very same day, Trump filed a $10 billion dollar defamation suit against the Wall Street Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch.Trump denies that in 2003 he contributed a crude drawing to a book of “bawdy letters” compiled for pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday, as reported by…

Sky York Journal A&O Shearman’s securities litigation practice is a little lighter. As of today, New York-based partner Agnès Dunogué has moved firms, opting to continue her career at Freshfields. Freshfields’ co-head of securities and shareholder litigation Mary Eaton said of the move, “I’ve had the privilege of litigating in the same securities space as Agnès for a number of years. She will be a key driver in the next phase of the team’s growth in the US.” Bloomberg Law, which broke the story of the lateral move, couches it in terms of the battle between U.K.-based firms (both Freshfields and…

Sky York Journal There’s a fundamental architectural flaw in how the internet works that most people have never heard of, but it explains nearly every frustration you have with modern technology. Why your photos are trapped in Apple’s ecosystem. Why you can’t easily move data between apps. Why every promising new service starts from scratch, knowing nothing about you. And most importantly, why AI—for all its revolutionary potential—risks making Big Tech even bigger instead of putting powerful tools in your hands. Former Google and Stripe executive Alex Komoroske (who recently wrote for us about why the future of AI need…

Sky York Journal In the heat of an argument — whether it’s a tense negotiation or a spirited debate among colleagues — lawyers often feel a reflexive pull to win the point. We’re trained for it. Law school hones our ability to spot laws in logic, dismantle weak arguments, and, let’s be honest, enjoy the intellectual high ground. In the business world, especially in corporate legal departments where relationships, influence, and outcomes often stretch beyond the board room, there’s a crucial distinction many of in-house lawyers miss: Do you want to beat them? Or do you want to win? This…

Sky York Journal Once Angie Gonzalez started to hear rumors that her husband might finally leave CECOT this week, she stopped being able to sleep. She got out of bed at 4 a.m. on Friday morning and has spent the day glued to a computer screen, watching online plane trackers, following the news on social media, and waiting for the chance to speak to him again. Gonzalez’s husband, Jesús Alberto Ríos Andrade, was one of 238 Venezuelans that the Trump administration summarily sent to the notorious El Salvador prison in March under the Alien Enemies Act. It’s been a hard…

Sky York Journal House Republicans passed President Donald Trump’s $9 billion rescissions package Thursday night after Senate Republicans made minor changes to the bill. The package passed on a largely party line 216-213 vote. All Democrats and two Republicans — Michael Turner (R-OH) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) — voted against the bill. The vote was held up for hours as Republicans fought with one another about a vote on a non-binding resolution asking the Trump administration to release files on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s case. The rescissions package effectively authorizes actions the White House has already taken to claw back…

Sky York Journal It’s true: he won’t be like other judges. Emil Bove — whose nomination to a seat on the Third Cirucit the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced Thursday morning — spent the past several months in a senior role at the DOJ tearing through barriers that were created to separate federal law enforcement from partisan politics. He purportedly told attorneys to be ready to say “fuck you” to the courts if they blocked Alien Enemies Act removals to CECOT. He moved to dismiss prosecutors who worked on the January 6 investigation. Many of these barriers would have been pitched…

Sky York Journal Top Florida Democrats issued blistering responses on Wednesday following a TPM report that detailed how Sunshine State Gov. Ron DeSantis diverted “disaster preparedness” resources in the rush to build the “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant detention camp. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), who toured the site earlier this month and subsequently decried the conditions there, sentd a statement to TPM blasting every aspect of the project.  “DeSantis already operates under a cloud of corruption when it comes to stealing taxpayer dollars. So, it’s no surprise he’d siphon off and create shortfalls in our hurricane preparedness funds for this boondoggle, then hide…
