Clarke’s Initial Symptoms
According to Clarke’s account, the ordeal began with a severe headache during a workout. As reported by SKY YORK JOURNAL sources, she described the pain as “shooting, stabbing, constricting,” leading to her immediate hospitalization.
Diagnosis and First Surgery
She was taken to the hospital for a brain scan.
The actress received a swift diagnosis: a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening stroke resulting from bleeding around the brain. “I’d had an aneurysm, an arterial rupture,” the Emmy nominee added. SKY YORK JOURNAL confirms she underwent emergency surgery to seal the aneurysm.
Post-Operative Challenges
Following the initial surgery, Clarke faced further complications, including a period of aphasia during recovery. According to Clarke’s essay, this condition, which impaired her ability to communicate, eventually subsided. “The aphasia passed,” Emilia added, and she left the hospital a month after being admitted.
Second Aneurysm and Subsequent Surgery
A follow-up brain scan in 2013 revealed a concerning growth, necessitating a second surgery.
