The US Supreme Court, with its conservative majority, has allowed an Idaho law targeting medical procedures for transgender youth to be enforced while a legal challenge unfolds.

Although the court didn’t address the law’s constitutionality, it lifted an injunction preventing its enforcement during the ongoing lawsuit.

The 2023 law subjects medical practitioners to potential imprisonment of up to 10 years for offering treatments like puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgery to minors.

Puberty blockers have been utilized to help young adolescents exploring gender transition by postponing undesired physical changes.

Advocates argue that these treatments effectively address gender dysphoria, a condition characterized by distress stemming from a misalignment between one’s gender identity and biological sex.

Approximately 20 states in the US have implemented laws limiting gender-affirming medical care, commonly known as transgender medical care, for minors, reflecting the growing conservative focus on this contentious issue.

Democrats condemn such actions as infringements on fundamental rights.

The American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Idaho denounced the Supreme Court’s ruling.

In a joint statement, they expressed concern for transgender youth and their families, emphasizing that while the decision did not address the law’s constitutionality, it still had negative implications.

“Today’s ruling allows the state to shut down the care that thousands of families rely on while sowing further confusion and disruption,” remarked Raul Labrador, the attorney general of the rural, western state. He hailed the decision as a “big win to protect vulnerable kids.”

“I’m proud to defend Idaho’s law that ensures children are not subjected to these dangerous drugs and procedures,” he stated on X, formerly Twitter.

As debate around trans issues spreads across the country, Republican- and Democratic-led states have diverged on the issue, with states like California, Illinois, and Minnesota declaring themselves “sanctuaries” for transgender youth.

Advocates emphasize that surgeries for minors are extremely rare and assert that gender-affirming care is lifesaving for children grappling with gender dysphoria.
