“The special counsel tasked with investigating the alleged mishandling of classified documents by President Joe Biden has concluded the inquiry,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland informed Congress on Wednesday, refraining from disclosing the investigation’s outcome.
Special Counsel Robert Hur was appointed by Garland last year following the discovery of classified material dating back to Biden’s tenure as vice president in 2022. The documents were found at Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware, and in a former office.
“A Washington Post article on Tuesday revealed that the investigation’s report is critical of the handling of documents by Democratic President Joe Biden and his aides but does not recommend any criminal charges.
In a letter to members of Congress seen by AFP on Wednesday, Attorney General Garland stated that Special Counsel Hur submitted his report on Monday.
“I am committed to making as much of the Special Counsel’s report public as possible,” Garland affirmed, highlighting that the White House was still reviewing the report.
Garland also assured that he confirmed Hur conducted the investigation appropriately.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump, Biden’s likely opponent in the November presidential election, is currently facing charges related to his alleged mishandling of classified documents.”
“Former President Donald Trump faces indictment by special counsel Jack Smith, accused of endangering national security by retaining top-secret nuclear and defense information after departing the White House.
Notably, there are significant distinctions between the investigations into Biden and Trump. The Biden case involves fewer than a dozen documents, while the Trump probe uncovered several hundred at his residence.
Moreover, Trump is alleged to have attempted to mislead investigators, whereas Biden has been cooperative. Biden even underwent questioning by Special Counsel Hur in October, along with dozens of current and former staff members.”
According to the Post, Biden aides explained that the documents inadvertently ended up at his home and office due to “sloppy staff work.”
