Severe summer storms sweeping across much of the United States have caused significant disruptions in air travel, leading to numerous flight delays and cancellations at some of the nation’s busiest airports, including LaGuardia in New York, Chicago O’Hare, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.
The intense weather system, characterized by heavy rain, high winds, and dangerous lightning, forced air traffic controllers to restrict operations and, in some cases, temporarily halt departures to ensure passenger safety. The resulting delays have left terminals overcrowded and passengers facing long wait times and rescheduled itineraries.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), hundreds of flights were affected over the weekend, with LaGuardia and O’Hare among the most severely impacted. The ripple effect from these delays has also affected other regional and connecting airports across the country.
Meteorologists caution that storm activity may continue into the early part of next week, especially in the Southeast and Northeast, which could prolong travel disruptions. Airlines such as Delta, United, and American have responded by issuing travel waivers for affected routes, allowing customers to reschedule without fees.
