Sherri’s experience is far from extreme when considering posts shared online ahead of the supposed Sept. 23 Rapture—a rumor that seemingly originated from a YouTube video shared by Joshua Mhlakela, a South African pastor, in June.
In the days leading up to the supposed end of the world, the Rapture hashtag earned over 300,000 videos on TikTok, in which many people detailed—either genuinely or satirically—selling their possessions or sharing corroborating evidence for why they believed the apocalypse was here.
“There has been so much that I really do believe this is happening,” one woman said in a Sept. 21 TikTok that garnered over one million views. “I’m not going to say 100 percent that it will, but the confirmations God has given me, seem to be pointing to next week.”
